| Hellcat Diving Down on Targets |
The Grumman F6F Hellcat is best known as the U.S. Navy's premier carrier-based fighter of the Pacific War, but it also proved to be a highly effective fighter-bomber during dive attacks against Japanese ground and naval targets.
As Allied forces advanced across the Pacific in the "island-hopping" campaign, Hellcats were routinely equipped with bombs and rockets to strike enemy airfields, artillery positions, supply depots, troop concentrations, and coastal defenses. Pilots typically approached the target at medium altitude, rolled into a steep dive of about 45–70 degrees, and released their bombs at low altitude before pulling out sharply. This technique greatly improved bombing accuracy while reducing the time the aircraft spent exposed to anti-aircraft fire.
The Hellcat's rugged construction made it particularly well suited for these dangerous missions. Its strong airframe could withstand the high stresses of repeated dive attacks, and its powerful engine allowed it to recover quickly after bomb release. In addition to carrying bombs of up to 2,000 pounds (907 kg), later variants could also carry 5-inch High Velocity Aircraft Rockets (HVARs), making the aircraft highly effective against fortified positions, shipping, and armored vehicles. After releasing its ordnance, the Hellcat often used its six .50-caliber Browning machine guns to strafe surviving targets.
Dive-bombing Hellcats played a crucial role in major Pacific campaigns, including the Mariana Islands, Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. They supported amphibious landings by destroying coastal defenses and providing close air support to Marines and Army troops. While specialized dive bombers such as the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver focused primarily on precision bombing, the Hellcat combined air superiority with ground attack capability, making it one of the most versatile and valuable aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy during the Second World War.
